Brazilian Jiu Jitsu- It is in the details!
Hand in hand with focus, and attention to detail is another key skill needed for Brazilian jiu-jitsu to help build and grow a solid foundation and promote a successful BJJ journey.
KIDS MARTIAL ARTS
Having a good focus for long periods of time is difficult. Not everyone is able to focus and pay attention to the little things. But doing the little things right is what makes the larger process work. In order to cultivate these characteristics, you must do things that require focus and attention. You cannot improve a certain skill without mindful practice with it.
“The real question is how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!” -Unknown
The good thing is that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be conquered the same way. You have to think of it in terms of consumption per bite. When you first start out it is important that you don’t eat too much too fast or you might choke (pun intended). If you want to try and eat a bite at a time, enjoy it, no need to rush as you have a lifetime to consume this elephant. Jiu-Jitsu is the exact same way! A typical class can consist of the instructor demonstrating around three techniques, and while they may all chain together- sometimes it is important to show techniques that do not.-this can make it difficult to keep the details memorized!
One of the things that can really help, especially when we run into the issue of needing to remember all these little details, but no real “anchors” in which to make it easier, we WRITE IT DOWN. That is right, you heard me! It is not uncommon at some martial art academies for you to see practitioners writing down the details of particular movements in order to review and study them later.
You can’t skip the details! They make or break the movements, it would be similar to trying to build a house while ignoring the blueprints- that might create a little bit of a problem in the long run. You have to be able to produce what is shown. As you learn more and become more proficient, you can make changes to the house as you see fit. It is a matter of time and an issue of experience.
BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU FOR KIDS
In jiu-jitsu, the angle of the grip, the placement of the foot, or the direction of pressure can make or break an entire position or technique. In our Stoic BJJ classes in Mansfield, we slow the processes down to encourage focus and attention to detail. This helps you increase your focus and your ability to notice the little things. After those key details are solidified, then we can pick up the pace and work to implement it within a live round or competition.
These are skills that can be applied both in jiu-jitsu and in life. In order to accomplish or conquer big things, you must be able to focus on the little details.
