The Stoic Ladies were out in full force this Sunday! Stoic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu had a unique opportunity to host a Women’s Only Open Mat, and what an amazing event it was! The Sisterhood of the Traveling Gi coordinating with one of our students, Grace Bush, came together to make this happen.
Strong Women build Strong Women, and that was on full display. While I hate to make the comparison of males versus females, it must be noted that Women on the mat are typically much different than their male counterparts. An Open Mat usually consists of “free rolling” or of people practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) without formal class instruction.
When you see a picture from an Open Mat, usually the men have very stoic and somber looks, with the occasional smile here and there. Here, you see nothing but smiles, each and every one of the ladies is smiling in a way that easily conveys “WE HAD FUN AT THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING GI’S OPEN MAT”. We love to support our community and that means our Women!
We have had great feedback from the community regarding this format of open mat, and we are excited to open our gym up to the ladies whenever they need a place to roll. Enough about us, and Open Mat, and more about “The Sisterhood“.
A glance at their website tells you the overall theme, they support women. Located on the front page of their website is a wonderful quote:
“Building sisterhood one dojo at a time.”
— Sisterhood of the Traveling Gi
This quote seems to embody what they stand for and who they are. Further down the page you will find a calendar that list times and locations for various Open Mats where the Sisterhood is being hosted. They wouldn’t stop there, would they? No! Scrolling further is a plethora of resources specific to women grapplers! This resource group seems to offer an extensive link to other established groups of women within the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community. AMAZING.
They have a podcast, that is FREE and can be checked out HERE (Spotify)
We are honored to have been able to support this group of ladies, and in doing so empowering our own. Until Next Time SOTTG!
