Hey, coach, how does Brazilian Jujitsu improve mental health?| Stoic Brazilian Jiu-JitsuHOW LONG ARE BJJ MATCHES?
Well, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu improves your health in a lot of ways. I think that it says a lot about a person when they’re willing to put themselves in a position and situation in which they don’t know the outcome. Time and time again, with Jiu-Jitsu, we do these things called sparring or rounds; grappling. Some people call it wrestling. During class typically there will be four six-minute-long matches, depending on the kid; and then adults, masters, and black belts depending on experience level typically rounds will last around 10 minutes.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU?
During those rounds, you are trying to submit your opponent. You’re trying to get them to give up, to quit. You’re not always sure what’s going to happen. Sometimes, when you partner up with someone, if you train with people enough, you might have a decent idea of how the match is going to go. Sometimes you get surprised. It happens to the best of us. One of the things that are kind of shocking is when you go with somebody, you have a good idea of where you match up with them. If you’ve rolled with them before, sometimes you’re the hammer, and sometimes you’re the nail.
BUILDING CONFIDENCE THROUGH MARTIAL ARTS
Going into those matches where you’re the nail and doing it anyway; knowing that is what is going to happen, knowing what the outcome is going to be, what it should be time and time again: that changes you. It turns you into someone else. You become something. It hardens you. You gain confidence. Knowing that if I roll with Jordan I’m not going to be able to get out of his mouth, and I end up in his mouth; man, that’s frustrating. But it also helps me identify areas I need to improve on. So it’s problem-solving the basics. So next time I get into that position with Jordan, I will try my solution. If my solution works: wonderful, I’m out. I can move on to something else. I can work on something else. I’m not saying that that’s done, but what’s probably going to happen is Jordan is going to find a counter to my counter, and we’re going to play this game repeatedly.
IMPROVE PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS
Through that process, I gain confidence. I gain problem-solving abilities. I’m able to improve my decision-making process through trial and error. You do this over the course of years, and countless hours and you turn into something completely different: a different version of yourself. I’d argue a better understanding of yourself because people in today’s society, in the world at large, those people that can really solve problems, have confidence in their own abilities, know their limits, and can set boundaries. Those are the people that are going to succeed. The ones that are going to have a much easier time being successful than those that don’t. Those are the people I want on my team EVERY SINGLE TIME.
