Origins of BJJ
BJJ originated in Brazil in the early 1900s. It was created by Carlos Gracie, who was taught traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu by Mitsuyo Maeda—a Japanese national who was traveling around the world teaching the art of Kodokan Judo. Carlos Gracie modified what he learned from Maeda to make it more practical for self-defense situations and street fights. The result was Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, which eventually came to be known simply as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
The Fundamentals of BJJ
At its core, BJJ is about using the proper technique to take your opponent to the ground and then applying a submission hold to force them to tap out or submit. This can be done through throws or takedowns, but the most common method is by using leverage and body positioning to take your opponent down. Once on the ground, BJJ practitioners use a variety of chokeholds and joint locks to force their opponent to submit.
